Uploading Documents

Learn how to upload documents to Infera Law and keep your files organized.

Supported File Types

Infera Law accepts these file types:

  • Documents: PDF, DOC, DOCX
  • Spreadsheets: XLS, XLSX
  • Images: JPG, PNG, GIF
  • Other: ZIP files containing any of the above

Anything else is rejected when you try to upload it.

Which files get read by the AI

Only PDFs and images (JPG, PNG, GIF) are read and extracted. Word and Excel files upload and store normally, but their contents aren't analyzed — they're filed as "Other" documents.

How to Upload Documents

Open the matter and click the green Upload Documents button in the matter sidebar. It's there on every tab of the matter, so you can upload at any point without leaving what you're doing.

An upload window opens. Fill it in top to bottom:

  1. Select party — required. Choose which party on the matter the documents belong to. Uploading won't start until a party is selected.
  2. Link to document request — optional. If the matter has open requests, pick one to tie these documents to its checklist so coverage updates as each file is read. Leave it on No request — upload to documents only to skip. See Document Requests.
  3. Add your files — drag and drop them onto the drop area, or use the buttons below it: Upload Documents to pick individual files (hold Ctrl/Cmd to select several), or Upload Folder to pick a whole folder.

What You Can Upload

  • Individual files — one at a time or many at once
  • Folders — the folder structure is recreated in the matter, including nested subfolders
  • ZIP archives — extracted automatically on arrival, with the structure inside preserved
  • Combined PDFs — a single PDF holding several documents (say, twelve months of statements) is split into separate documents for you. See Documents From a Combined Upload

Upload Progress

As the upload runs, a list of your files appears at the bottom of the window. Each file has its own progress bar, and turns green with a checkmark once it lands. Anything that fails is flagged in red with the reason.

Files upload one after another rather than all at once, so a large batch takes longer than a single file. Keep the window open while it works — closing it mid-upload asks whether you want to cancel. When the list is finished, click Done.

Client Uploads

Clients don't use this window, and they don't need an Infera Law account. Send them a document request instead: they get their own upload page showing a live checklist of what's still outstanding, and their files land straight in the matter. See The Client Upload Experience.

After Uploading

Once uploaded, your documents are:

  • Automatically scanned for text content (OCR for images/scanned PDFs)
  • Split automatically, if a single file contains multiple documents
  • Searchable by filename and content
  • Ready to share with clients or team members

File Size Limits

  • Maximum file size: 30 MB per file
  • Files per ZIP archive: up to 1,000

There's no cap on how many files you can upload at once — the 30 MB limit applies to each file individually. For files over 30 MB, split them into smaller parts before uploading.

Troubleshooting Upload Issues

If uploads fail:

  • Check that you selected a party — uploads won't start without one
  • Check your internet connection
  • Ensure the file type is supported and under 30 MB
  • Verify the file isn't corrupted
  • Try uploading a smaller file to test

See Troubleshooting for more help.
