Creating a Matter

Matters are how you organize cases in Infera. Each matter represents a client or case and contains all related documents, financial data, and affidavits.

Starting the Matter Wizard

  1. Click New Matter from the dashboard or sidebar
  2. The matter creation wizard will guide you through setup

Matter Wizard Steps

Step 1: Basic Information

Enter the basic details for the matter:

  • Matter Name - A name to identify this case (e.g., "Smith Divorce" or "Johnson v. Johnson")
  • Client Name - Your client's full legal name
  • Matter Type - Select the type of case (divorce, custody, etc.)
  • Case Number - Court case number (if assigned)

Click Next to continue.

Step 2: Client Information

Enter your client's details:

  • Full Legal Name - As it appears on legal documents
  • Date of Birth - Used for affidavit forms
  • Email Address - For sending upload links
  • Phone Number - Contact number

This information will be used to pre-fill financial affidavits and court forms.

Click Next to continue.

Step 3: Opposing Party

Enter information about the opposing party:

  • Name - Opposing party's full name
  • Attorney - Opposing counsel's name (if known)
  • Attorney Email - For document sharing

This step is optional but helps with document organization and sharing.

Click Next to continue.

Step 4: Document Checklist

Select which documents you'll need to collect for this matter:

  • Tax returns
  • Pay stubs
  • Bank statements
  • Credit card statements
  • Mortgage documents
  • Vehicle titles
  • Retirement account statements
  • And more...

This creates a checklist to track what you've received and what's still missing.

Click Next to continue.

Step 5: Review & Create

Review all the information you've entered:

  • Basic matter details
  • Client information
  • Opposing party details
  • Document checklist

If everything looks correct, click Create Matter.

After Creating a Matter

Once your matter is created, you can:

Upload Documents

Drag and drop documents into the matter, or click Upload. Infera will automatically:

  • Classify the document type
  • Extract relevant data (income, expenses, assets, debts)
  • Update your document checklist

Generate a link for your client to upload documents directly:

  1. Click Get Upload Link in the matter
  2. Copy the link and send it to your client
  3. Documents they upload will appear in this matter

View Extracted Data

As documents are processed, view the extracted data:

  1. Click on any document to see what Infera found
  2. Review and verify the extracted information
  3. Data flows automatically into financial affidavits

Generate Reports

Track your document collection progress:

  • See which documents have been received
  • Identify what's still missing
  • Generate reports for the court or opposing counsel

Editing a Matter

To update matter details after creation:

  1. Open the matter
  2. Click the pencil icon in the Matter Overview (top right of the Matter Details card)
  3. Update the desired fields
  4. Click Save

Deleting a Matter

To delete a matter:

  1. Open the matter
  2. Click the trash icon in the Matter Overview (top right of the Matter Details card)
  3. Confirm deletion

Warning: Deleting a matter removes all documents and data associated with it. This cannot be undone.
