Document Requests
Send a party a secure, structured request for documents — with a checklist of exactly what you need — and track what's been received in real time.
What Are Document Requests?
A document request is a formal, checklist-driven ask sent to a specific party in a matter (for example, the petitioner or respondent). Unlike a generic client upload link, a document request:
- Lists the specific items you need (bank statements, tax returns, custom documents, and more)
- Tracks coverage period by period — so you can see, for example, which months of a bank statement are still missing
- Shows the client a live checklist of what's still outstanding as they upload
- Updates in real time as Infera analyzes each uploaded file
- Produces a summary you can print or save as a PDF for your records
The client never needs an Infera account — they just open the link, drop in their files, and watch the checklist fill in.
Creating a Document Request
- Open the matter
- Click Document Requests in the matter sidebar
- Click New request
- Choose how to start:
- Build manually — fill in the request details yourself (below), then click Create request
- Upload the request to produce — let Infera read an inbound notice and draft the checklist for you (see Building a Request from an Uploaded Notice)
Request Details
Title — A name for the request, e.g. "Initial Disclosure" or "Response to RFP #1".
Requesting from (party) — The party you're collecting documents from. Only litigant parties (petitioner, respondent, plaintiff, defendant) can be selected.
Anchor date (base date) — The date that required-document windows are measured back from. For example, a "last 12 months of bank statements" item counts the 12 months ending on this date. Leave it blank to use the matter's filing date.
Due date — When you'd like the documents returned. This is shown to the client on the upload page.
Instructions — Free-text guidance shown to the client at the top of their upload page.
Start from template — Optionally pre-populate the checklist from a saved document template. If you don't choose a template, Infera adds a standard set of financial documents (bank statements, paystubs, tax returns, W-2s, and more).
Additional requested items — Add any custom items beyond the standard financial set, such as "Deed to marital home." You can include a short note on how to obtain each one.
Building a Request from an Uploaded Notice
If opposing counsel already sent you a formal request to produce (or similar discovery notice), you don't have to retype its list of items by hand.
- Click New request, then choose Upload the request to produce
- Select the party the request is directed to under Requesting from (party)
- Optionally enter a title (defaults to "Request to Produce — [party]")
- Choose the notice as a PDF
- Click Upload & parse
Infera reads the notice and builds a draft checklist, matching each requested paragraph to a standard financial type (bank statements, tax returns, pay stubs, and more) where it can, and adding anything else as a custom item. Related paragraphs — for example, several mentions of tax returns — are combined into a single item.
The draft opens in a review screen where items appear as Infera finishes parsing them (no need to refresh). Before sending it:
- Review each drafted item's label and instructions, and edit as needed
- Add or remove items with + Add item and Remove
- Adjust the title if needed
- Click Create request to open the request and start collecting documents
If Infera can't read the notice automatically, you can still add the requested items manually from the same review screen.
Sharing the Upload Link
Each open request has a secure upload link. To share it:
- In the Document Requests list, find the request
- Click Copy upload link
- Paste the link into an email, text message, or your client portal
The client opens the link, sees your firm name, the request title, the due date, and your instructions, and can begin uploading immediately — no account required.

Request Statuses
Each request carries a status you can change from the Change status menu:
- Open — Active and accepting uploads
- Fulfilled — Everything requested has been received
- Closed — No longer collecting (archived)
- Cancelled — Withdrawn
Open requests appear under Active; the rest are grouped under Past.
Viewing Item Status
Click View status on a request to expand a live breakdown:
- A progress bar showing how many items are received
- Each item's status: received, partial, outstanding, or awaiting upload
- For period-based items, colored month chips — green for periods received and red for periods still missing
- For account-based items (like bank statements), coverage per account, so you can see exactly which statements are outstanding for each account
While files are still being analyzed, you'll see an analyzing indicator. The status refreshes automatically as Infera finishes reading each file — there's no need to reload the page.
The Summary View
Click Summary on any request for an attorney-friendly overview, split into two clear sections:
- Received — Everything that's come in, with the specific months or periods covered (in green)
- Still needed — Everything outstanding, broken down by item and by account, showing the exact periods still missing (in red)
A partially received item appears in both sections: the months you have under Received, and the months you're still waiting on under Still needed.
Printing or Saving as PDF
From the Summary view you can:
- Copy as text — Copy a plain-text version of the summary to your clipboard
- Print / PDF — Open a print-ready version with your firm name at the top, suitable for saving as a PDF or filing in your records
The summary also updates in real time, so it reflects the latest uploads while it's open.
What the Client Sees
When a client opens the link, they get a guided upload page — no account required — that shows your firm name, the request, and a live "What's still needed" checklist. As they drop in files, Infera reads each one in the background and the page updates itself in real time: per-file summaries of what was found, and a checklist that flips from missing to received down to the exact statement month.
This client-facing experience is a major reason document requests come back faster and more complete. It's worth seeing in full — see The Client Upload Experience.
Finding a Request's Documents
On the matter's Documents tab, you can filter the document list by document request. When a matter has any requests, a Document Request filter appears:
- Open the Documents tab
- Click the Document Request filter
- Choose a request (or All requests)
The list narrows to the documents linked to that request, and the active filter shows as a removable pill.
Linking an Existing Document to a Request
A document uploaded outside the request — for example, one you uploaded yourself — can be linked to a request after the fact. In the document list, click the Link to document request icon on a document's row, then choose the request (and optionally the specific checklist item) it satisfies. Linked documents show the icon in green; click it again to change or update the link.
Deleting a Request
Click Delete on a request to remove it and its checklist. Any files the client already uploaded are kept in the matter — only the request and its tracking are removed.
Best Practices
- Set the right anchor date — It determines which periods Infera expects, so coverage tracking is accurate
- Use templates — Save a standard checklist once and reuse it across matters
- Write clear instructions — Tell the client exactly what each item is and how to obtain it
- Watch the summary — Use the Received / Still needed split to follow up on precisely what's outstanding
- Mark requests Fulfilled or Closed — Keep your active list focused on what's still open
