Organizing with Folders
Keep your documents organized using Infera Law's folder system.
Three Views
On a matter's Documents tab, switch between three views:
- Organized (default) — Infera Law automatically files every document into folders as it reads it.
- By Account — every received document grouped by financial account. See Documents by Account.
- As Received — the folder structure exactly as you uploaded it.
Your filters carry over when you switch views.
The Organized View
As soon as Infera Law finishes reading a document, it's filed into a folder — no setup required. By default, folders are nested Party > Category > Institution > Account (for example, Respondent/Bank Statement/Chase/Chase …1234); a level is skipped when there's nothing to put there.
The folder tree on the left side of the Documents tab starts with a few special entries:
- All documents — everything in the matter.
- Reading N documents… — documents Infera Law hasn't finished reading yet. They move into a folder automatically once processing finishes.
- Needs attention — documents Infera Law couldn't classify, duplicates, and documents that failed to process.
Opening a folder shows its subfolders first, then any documents filed directly in it. Each folder shows a Download and Share action covering everything inside it (including subfolders). Share starts a new share with those documents already selected; downloads are zipped in the background, and you can track progress and grab finished zips from the Downloads button on the documents toolbar. Zip files are kept for 7 days.
Moving a Document
If a document lands in the wrong folder, you can move it:
- Select the document (or documents)
- Click Move
- Choose an existing folder, or type a new folder name
- Confirm the move
A document you move manually shows a pin icon and won't be refiled automatically — not by Infera Law re-reading it, by editing its metadata, or by Re-organize (below).
Customizing the Folder Template
Attorneys, paralegals, and managers can change which levels Infera Law files by, and their order:
- Click Settings in the firm sidebar
- Open the Document Organization tab
- Add, remove, or reorder the levels (Party, Category, Institution, Account), or click Reset to default
- Check the preview, then click Save
Changes only apply to documents Infera Law reads from now on. To refile a matter's existing documents under the new template, open the matter's Organized view and click Re-organize. Documents you've moved manually are left where you put them.
See Document Organization for the full settings page, including document naming.
As Received
When you upload documents or zip files to Infera Law, the folder structure from your upload is automatically preserved. This means that if your files are organized into folders on your computer (including nested folders inside a zip archive), they'll appear the same way in Infera Law after upload — unaffected by the Organized view's template.
Note: Creating new folders, moving files between folders, or renaming/deleting folders in the As Received view is not currently available.
How Should I Structure My Uploads?
Most firms organize their uploads by case, usually with folders for each party involved. Sometimes, additional nesting is used—for example, subfolders for specific accounts or sources of documents.
Here’s a common example:
├── Smith v. Smith
│ ├── Petitioner - John Smith
│ │ ├── Bank of America Checking
│ │ ├── 401k Statements
│ │ └── Paystubs
│ └── Respondent - Jane Smith
│ ├── Chase Checking
│ └── Tax ReturnsSet up folders like this on your computer before uploading to Infera Law. The structure will be preserved exactly as you arrange it.
Choose a layout that best fits your firm's workflow—whatever structure you use on upload will remain in Infera Law.
If you'd rather not plan your uploads around folders, the Organized view above files everything for you automatically.
Searching Within Folders
Currently, you can browse your uploaded folder structure as it appears in your upload. Searching is performed across all documents unless otherwise specified.
In upcoming versions, folder-specific search and advanced filtering will be available.
See Document Search for more search options.
